Black & White Peppercorns (Piper nigrum) From the Sanskrit word pippali meaning berry.
Region: Originally native to India, peppercorns are now commercially produced in both India and Indonesia.
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)
Region: Indigenous to both Southern India and Sri Lanka, now grown in Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Indochina, and Tanzania.
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum)
Region: Originally produced from the tree bark native to Sri Lanka, now commercially produced in Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, Brazil, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Caribbean.
Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) Derived from the Latin word clavus, meaning nail, cloves are nail-like in shape.
Region: Native to the Moluccas, top producers are now Zanzibar, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, India, Pemba, and Brazil.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Derived from a Sanskrit word singabera, meaning horn-shaped, the ginger rhizome resembles the shape of deer antlers.
Region: Native to Southeast Asia, now commercially produced in Jamaica, India, Fiji, Indonesia, and Australia.
Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)
Region: Native to the Indonesian archipelago, major producers now include Indonesia, the West Indies, and South India.
Valerian root (Valeriana wallichii) The name Valerian comes from the Latin word valere, meaning to be strong or healthy. The common name Valerian includes numerous Valeriana species.
Region: Indigenous to the temperate Himalayas, Kashmir, and Bhutan and grows only at elevations over 3000 m.
