Origin of Chai
Dating back to roughly 1000 BC, China, often named the birthplace of tea drinking, first recorded use of tea in its society. This is where the derivatives of te and ch originated. Te and ch are the two pronunciations of tea that have made their way into a diverse range of languages around the world. Derivatives of te can be found in English, French, Afrikaans, Danish, Dutch, Hebrew, Italian, scientific Latin, Spanish, and many more languages. Cha or chai derivatives are found in Arabic, Czech, Portuguese, Greek, Hindi and many others languages. Today, in North America, the word chai is used to refer almost exclusively to the Indian chai or masala chai beverage.
Although there are many forms of tea available in India, masala chai or spiced tea, is the most popular. Enjoyed throughout India, masala chai could very easily be called the national drink with each region having its own unique recipe and ingredients. Generally consumed after dinner, masala chai is used as an aperitif to aid in digestion.
